5 Tips for a Perfect Elevator Pitch
5 Tips for a Perfect Elevator Pitch5 Tips for a Perfect Elevator PitchYou are going about your day and you happen to run into someone who works for your dream employer. You have about 30-60 seconds to convince them that you could be an asset to their company. Thats where your elevator pitch comes in.You never know when you could run into the person who could help open the door to your dream job. You should always be prepared, just in case. An elevator pitch should be brief, persuasive and it should highlight your skills.1. Write it downYour elevator pitch should be about 30-60 seconds long. Yes, that means you need to find a way to explain who you are, what skills you have and what value you bring, all in under a minute. Make a list, write it down on paper and find a way to make it sound interesting and brief. Then take that piece of paper and use it to practice until you know it by heart, you are comfortable saying it and can say it in a way that sounds natural. Try recording your p itch to make sure it sounds good and is within the time limit.2. Choose your skillsKnowing which skills to highlight in your pitch is vital. You want to make sure that the skills you choose apply to your dream position at your dream company. Try doing some research on your dream role and finding common skills that are required for the role. Then compare those skills to ones that you already possess and write them down. These are the transferable skills and qualifications that you will want to highlight in your Elevator Pitch.3. Use datenbankindex cardsTake a few index cards and write down one of these questions on each one. You should answer each question with approximately a two sentence answer for each one. Using the lists that you made above, take each item and see which question they fit best under. It will help you to organize your thoughts.Who am I?What do I do?How do I do it?What value do I bring?Who do I do it for? What is my greatest accomplishment?4. Organize your thoughtsO rganize your cards in order from the what you think is the most important to the least. You may not have much time to sell yourself, a couple of minutes at most. You want to make sure you leave the person with something worth remembering. What do you want them to remember when the conversation is over and you go your separate ways?5. Offer a geschftsleben cardYou should always carry a couple of business cards with you, everywhere you go. You never know when they will come in handy. Your business card should have your name visible as well as your phone number, email address, and place of business. That way anyone you give it to, will know exactly who you are.At the end of your elevator pitch, you should offer the person your business card and ask about following up with them at a later date. They may even give you a business card in return and you can offer to follow-up with them instead, taking a bit of the weight off their shoulders. You will be sure to remember to follow-up, where as they may forget in the bustle of their busy day.By following these tips when crafting and executing your elevator pitch, you are sure to leave a great impression on the person you are speaking to. Remember to be confident and dont forget to practice. Good luck You might have just turned right on the road to your dream job. Now its just a matter of getting the doors.

Bischof, program chair for the conference. Next month, ASME will host a special webinar exploring the subject of small modular reactors (SMRs), a new concept in the nuclear power field that has the potential to make it easier and cheaper to construct and finance new nuclear reactors. Registration is now open for the webinar, which is being held as part of the ASME Energy Forum an ongoing multi-media series that explores the technical aspects and workings of a broad range of energy sources and related technologies. The free, hour-long webinar, Small Modular Reactors Nuclears Big Opportunity in a Little Package, will take place on March 20 at 200 p.m. Eastern Time. The online seminar is being presented in conjunction with the ASME 2014 Small Modular Reactors (SMR) konferenz, which will be held in Washington, D.C., from April. 15-17. While the nearly 100 nuclear reactors currently operating in the United States are big and have a large capital cost, small modular reactors could be built in factories and shipped to wherever reliable low-emission electricity is needed at a much lower cost than conventional large nuclear plants. During the Small Modular Reactors webinar, presenters Jose N. Reyes, chief technology officer at NuScale Power, and Paul Murphy, special counsel at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley McCloy LLP, will discuss the technological, economic and regulatory possibilities and challenges regarding small nuclear reactors. Robotics Present State Future Trends
Robotics Present State Future Trends Robotics Present State Future Trends Contemporary robots are used for jobs that are boring, dirty, or dangerous or for tasks that require more speed, precision, or endurance than a human can provide. They perform almost all welding, painting, and assembly tasks in the automotive industry and have become a basic element of production in industries ranging from electronics to wood products. According to World Robotics, a 2008 report published by the International Federation of Robotics, the estimated number of industrial robots installed worldwide is more than one 100000050% in Asia and Australia, 33% in Europe, and 17% in North America. An assessment of the international state of robotics RD published in 2006 by the nonprofit analysis World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC), found that the U.S. was leading in robot navigation in outdoor environments, robot architectures (the integration of control, structure, and computation), and in applications t o space, defense, underwater systems, and some aspects of tafelgeschirr and personal robots.Japan and Korea lead in technology for robot mobility, humanlike robots, and some aspects of service and personal robots (including entertainment). Europe led in mobility for structured environments, including urban transportation. Europe also has significant programs in elder care and home service robotics. Australia led in commercial applications of field robotics, particularly in such areas as cargo handling and mining, as well as in the theory and application of localization and navigation.Cognitive robots can be used as home helpers, caregivers, or emergency and rescue aids. The panel also reported that the U.S. lost its preeminence in industrial robotics at the end of the 1980s, and nearly all its robots for welding, painting, and assembly are imported from Japan or Europe.U.S.RD efforts on robotics have focused primarily on military and defense-related applicationsunmanned aerial, groun d, and maritime systems, both surface and undersea. The Department of Defense plans to develop an increasingly sophisticated force of unmanned systems over the next 25 years and expects to integrate them with manned systems. In 2009, the DOD published the 25-year, unmanned-systems integrated roadmap to 2034. In July 2008, the Robotics Technology Consortium, Inc., was formed with 70 initial organizations, to speed the creation and deployment of ground robotics technology for the DOD and other U.S. government agencies. It has since grown to more than 200 member organizations.A congressional robotics caucus was formed in 2007 to broaden awareness among members of Congress and policy analysts of key issues facing the U.S. robotics industry. In May 2009, the caucus published A Roadmap for U.S. Robotics From Internet to Robotics, a targeted RD roadmap for nonmilitary applications of robotics in manufacturing, in medical and healthcare, in domestic and professional services, and in emerging technologies. In 2005, the European Robotics Technology Platform was formed to strengthen links between academia and industry, and to develop a research agenda of European robotics. In 2009, the industry group Coordination Action for Robotics in Europe (CARE) also published the Strategic Research Agenda for Robotics. In Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has sponsored robotics activities for a long time. A 2007 national technology roadmap by the Trade Ministry called for one million robots to be installed throughout the country by 2025.To alleviate a workforce shortage in the country, robots are expected to fill the jobs of 3.5 million people by 2025. The Japanese government also estimates that the nation may save as much as $21 billion on insurance payments in the same year by using robots to monitor the health of elderly people. In South Korea, a 10-year robotics initiative was launched along with a detailed roadmap to make the country the second-largest provider of robotics in the world, after Japan. Robot Land, a theme park being built near Seoul, is expected to open in 2013. The countrys forecasts include placing a robot in every household by 2020.Future Environments The convergence of technologies involving computing, communication, and mit niveau interfaces with autonomous robotics suggests that networks of intelligent, autonomous robots may become the next disruptive technology. The concept of networking everyday objects and appliances in an ambient intelligent environment is not new. But the focus has usually been on the creation, delivery, and sharing of information, and not on the performance of physical tasks.Autonomous mobile robots may one day perform complex medical procedures, including surgery, on patients in dangerous or remote locations from battlefields to space, with little human guidance. Advances in miniaturization and bionanotechnology could lead to a new generation of nanorobots, which would revolutionize the medical indu stry. Nanobots may provide treatment at the cellular level, perhaps clearing clogged arteries, repairing genes, battling cancer cells, and delivering drugs.Cognitive robots can become available as office helpers or as robotic companions for guiding the blind and assisting the elderly. General-purpose anthropomorphic robots, with human-like hands, can be used in transforming manufacturing from resource-intensive to knowledge-intensive, and creating totally unmanned factories. Agricultural robotic scouts may roam the fields of the future to care for the plants, use sensors to provide detailed real-time information about the status of the crop, and apply data fusion techniques for making management decisions.Adapted from Moving on Their Own by Ahmed K. Noor, for Mechanical Engineering, November 2008.U.S. research and development efforts on robotics have focused primarily on military and defense-related applications- unmanned aerial, ground, and maritime systems, both surface and unders ea.

How To Use Social Media Monitoring For Your Business
How To Use Social Media Monitoring For Your BusinessHow To Use Social Media Monitoring For Your BusinessHow To Use Social Media Monitoring For Your BusinessPortions excerpted from Real-Time absatzwirtschaft PR How to Instantly Engage Your Market, Connect with Customers, and Create Products that Grow Your Business Now by David Meerman Scott.Used with permission. John Wiley Sons, Inc., 2010. Meerman ScottEvery second of every day, people around the world are talking online about the companies they do geschftlicher umgang with and products that they use. Simple and free social media monitoring tools allow you to listen in on these discussions as ordinary people talk about your company.Big or small, it doesnt matter You need to know whats being said about you and about the issues critical to your business to help protect your companys online identity. And in order to react in real time, you need to know quickly. The first priority in your social media marketing strategy is to listen to bloggers, analysts, journalists, and others who talk frequently about you and your business. To find these voices, start by checking the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, and so on) for all the relevant keywords and phrases you can think of your company, customers, competitors, prospects, product categories, buzzwords whatever you can think of.Tools for Social Media MonitoringOnce you have identified key sources, the next step is to begin monitoring what they say in real time.As its name suggests, the really simple way to do this is using RSS, Really Simple Syndication a tool that allows you to harvest content from hundreds of blogs and news feeds without having to visit each one. RSS feeds update each time a site changes, alerting you to relevant information on topics that you specify. I use Google Reader for this, but there are many RSS readers to choose from.Twitter is another social mediaplatform to stay on top of breaking news. Many bloggers, journalists, and media outlets now use Twitter to drive traffic to fresh content as it appears. If these sources are active on Twitter, youll find a Twitter ID on their sites or blogs. Use TweetDeck or another Twitter-monitoring tool to aggregate your important Twitter feeds (that is, sets of tweets important for your business) so you can easily monitor whats being said by the people who matter to you.How to Stay on Top of the Millions of Discussions Going on Right NowCreate a comprehensive list of search terms relevant to your activities. Include the names of your company, senior executives, competitors, customers, prospects, products plus any relevant buzzwords or phrases every term you can think ofUse search engines (e.g., Google News or Yahoo News) to set up a news alert using those search terms. This will automatically inform you in real time when any of your search terms crop up. Set up alerts on blog search engines, too. Note that if you choose Google Alerts, you can set the alert to let you know when a phrase appears in multiple content types, so one set of alerts can help you monitor blogs, newsfeeds, Web sites, and more.As monitoring progresses you will likely need to modify your search terms as some yield a flood of false hits and others nothing. Some services offer advanced features that allow you to refine your searches. For instance, Boolean operators like and, but, and not can make your searches more specific. If you need help, look for independent consultants with a hintergrund in library science. Add new search terms as you go along (watch for tags that authors apply to items that interest you). Its an ongoing process, so you cant just set your search terms and forget about them.Monitor your search terms on Twitter, too. Some tweets will show up in your news alerts if you use a service that indexes Twitter, like Google. Even so, I find its more effective to monitor Twitter directly. Use a Twitter monitoring tool like TweetDeck or HootSuite to catch your key phrases. You c an also use Twitters own search function for one-off searches.Drive the Social Media ConversationThe goal here is to know what people say immediately, so you can comment in real time, if appropriate. And that is certainly easier when you have already identified people who are likely to talk about you and your company. Its like joining a circle of your friends at a cocktail party You can anticipate that their conversations will interest you. And because you are accepted by the circle, you can easily jump in with your own thoughts. So as you monitor the people who talk about you, it is good to get a sense of what each persons interests are. If someone writes about your industry, get to know their specific interests. Comment occasionally on their posts or articles even if they dont refer to your company or products. If youre already a known voice, your opinion will be taken more seriously when you jump in to discuss something directly related to your business. The benefit of reacting quic kly and being among the first to comment is huge. You are seen as someone who cares and is on top of whats going on.Author BioDavid Meerman Scotts book, The New Rules of Marketing PR, opened peoples eyes to the new realities of marketing and public relations on the Web. Six months on the BusinessWeek bestseller list and published in more than twenty languages, New Rules is now a modern business classic. Scotts popular blog and hundreds of speaking engagements around the world give him a singular perspective on how businesses are implementing new strategies to reach buyers. Now, in Real-Time Marketing PR,Scott opens eyes again with his groundbreaking ideas on the opportunities (and threats) inherent in todays always-on, 247, instant business environment.

What Clients Look For When Hiring a Staffing Agency
What Clients Look For When Hiring a Staffing AgencyWhat Clients Look For When Hiring a Staffing AgencyWhat Clients Look For When Hiring a Staffing Agency RossheimIn our companion article, How to Improve Staffing Results An Agency Perspective, recruiters shared some of the opportunities they see for clients to improve their screening candidates and expedite the hiring process. In this article, we flip the tables to ask, What do clients want from their staffing firms? Its essential that staffing agencies do a periodic gut check on what clients look for from their staffing agency and third-party recruiting business. Here are some straight answers from the mouths of clients who haveturned away many pitches when hiring a staffing agency.Show prospects your depth. Anyone can google for candidates. To win new business, agencies must show that they will go deeper than the competition or the client to field the right candidates, whether for a temp role, a direct hire or something in between.I wi ll absolutely select a staffing vendor based on the depth of their recruiting process, says Matt Lowney, executive vice president for talent and operations at The Buntin Group, a Nashville-based advertising agency. The responses are truly varied. I want to know how youre sourcing, who are you talking to, how you are using contacts as a launch point for referrals.Make transparent how you earn every penny of your fee. Talk to prospective clients about how youll surface candidates that the client could not have reached on their own. Tell a story about how youve done this for other customers.Ill look and see how many of the agencys reqs are just doing the post and pray and charging a big fee, says Lowney. Ill ask new hires, How did that recruiter find you? So many times, the agency had no relationship with the candidate. I dont think its worth a big commission for a recruiter who just did simple online searches.Take job orders meticulously. We need an agency that will look into everythi ng about our day-to-day operation, from the physical and climate requirements of our work, to whether or not a particular position will be in air conditioning or not, whether it will require the use of a computer or not, and what career paths exist in our growing company, says Tim Whitney, Regional Director of Production and Quality at Coast Southwest, a chemicals distributor in Arlington, Texas.Today, even when we hire manual labor, we want to know about workers befhigung to work with computers and automated systems.Show the difference you can make with candidates. If you can bring it, show it. Sometimes I get nothing back after I express an interest directly to a potential candidate, says Lowney. But a good agency will have a relationship with candidates that makes a difference and causes them to engage with our opportunity. If the agency can do that and I cant, its well worth the money. I have no problem paying for things that Im not getting done myself.Supply workers ready to do the work. Agencies cant supply work-ready temps if they dont have intimate knowledge of the work to be done. To acquire that knowledge, theres no substitute for visiting the work site.I expect temps to be ready to go, says Whitney. So the agency has to do its homework to learn what the company does, then come in and see what we do.Have a deep understanding of every industry you serve. In an age when the reputation of a staffing firm can travel as quickly as a viral video, its unwise to bid for business that you dont understand, or to send in workers who are fluent in the industry.Im not going to use an agency thats only supplied geschftszimmer staff, says Whitney. Our business is manufacturing and distribution, and we need an agency with experience that aligns with my needs.Look out for the clients long-term interests. That applies even when supplying short-term temps. An agency that consistently fields temp workers with full-time potential will be deeply appreciated by many clients .Who wouldnt want the temp to perm option and permanently hire qualified people who have already demonstrated that they can navigate the clients workplace? If I hire a temp, Im basically looking to hire an employee, says Whitney.Demonstrate the durability of your agency and its internal staff. No one wants to deal with a staffing firm whose own employees act like they were just sent over by a temp agency. Agencies with a continuous influx of low-paid new grads cannot win the confidence of clients seeking a long-term staffing relationship.Says Lowney I ask the vendors people, How long have you been with the company, how do you show your commitment, what keeps you there?Understand the DemandIts all well and good to follow best practices that have served you well throughout the years. But times change, and so do the staffing needs of your clients. You need to stay one step ahead if you have any hope of success. You Wont Believe How Many Americans Feel Bullied at Work
You Won't Believe How Many Americans Feel Bullied at Work You Won't Believe How Many Americans Feel Bullied at Work When we think about bullying, we tend to picture younger kids getting picked on at the playground. But apparently, adults experience their fair share of bullying as well - particularly those who work in an office setting. In fact, a whopping 29 percent of employees claim theyâve been bullied on the job, according to a CareerBuilder survey. Certain workers are more likely to be bullied than others. A good 40 percent of LGBT adults say theyâve experienced on-the-job bullying, while 39 percent of younger workers aged 18 to 24 say the same. And 32 percent of women have had a similar experience. If youâve been the victim of bullying at work, you should know that you do have options for fighting back. And the sooner you exercise them, the sooner that bullying is likely to stop. Though bullying can take many different forms in a work environment, the underlying theme is that victims have come away feeling grossly disrespected and mistreated. For the purpose of its study, CareerBuilder defines bullying as: If youâve experienced any of these, or a variation thereof, it pays to get proactive. Otherwise, that bullying is only likely to continue. If youâve been the victim of job-related bullying, you should know that thereâs a good chance your managerâs or colleaguesâ behavior is in violation of company policy. It may even be against the law. Itâs for this reason that youâll need to keep a detailed record of any and all bullying incidents youâre subject to. Each time someone at the office mistreats you, document what happens. Write down the date, time, location and players involved. Be sure to include a list of people who witness the bullying, even if theyâre mere bystanders. And do your best to get as specific as possible so that youâre able to give a clear account of what happened. For example, if a co-worker used racial slurs when addressing you during a meeting , write down precisely what that person said, and the context in which he or she said it. Not only it is vital that you maintain a record of the bullying incidents youâre involved in, but you should also store that record someplace secure. Unfortunately, keeping it on your laptop may not be good enough. For better protection, store a copy online, or send one to your personal email. Once youâve established a pattern of bullying, take that information to your companyâs human resources department . Better yet, get a hold of your employee handbook and highlight the sections the person who bullied you has clearly violated. This way, your HR department will have no choice but to take action. Though the idea of approaching HR might seem intimidating, you shouldnât let your fear of being labeled a tattletale stop you from speaking up. Surprisingly, 72 percent of workers who fall victim to bullying donât report it to HR, and thatâs a huge mistake. Finally, if all else fails, you may want to get an outside attorney involved. If you go this route, your best course of action may be to arrive at a settlement that allows you to feel secure financially as you look for a new company to work for . But if youâre thorough in your documentation, in many cases, it wonât come to that. Though youâd think adults would be past the bullying stage, that clearly isnât the case. Just know that you do have rights as an employee, and you shouldnât hesitate to protect yourself from bullying as needed.

Why Its Wrong to Think You Cant Be Happy at Work- The Muse
Why Its Wrong to Think You Cant Be Happy at Work- The Muse Why Its Wrong to Think You Cant Be Happy at Work Youâre a skeptic. You read career advice telling you to âfollow your passionâ and âfind a career you love,â and while it all sounds great in theory, youâre not buying it. I get it. As someone who writes about the career space daily, Iâve encountered many people who donât share the same philosophy as me. People who believe thereâs no possible way that you can be as happy at the office as you are outside of it- so you might as well really embrace the idea of âworking for the weekends.â But, as someone who can also say with certainty Iâm a better person and employee when Iâm enjoying my work, I decided to take on the challenge of refuting this notion. Hereâs why people say itâs impossible to be happy at work- and why theyâre wrong: 1. âThatâs Why Itâs Called Work, Itâs Not Supposed to Be Funâ When I was a kid, Iâd regularly ask my dad how his day went- and his response was always, without fail, âwork was work.â We joke about it now, but at the time, all I could think was how miserable it must be to have nothing to talk about at the end of the day- let alone warrant this kind of sad, exhausted response. Yes, work is work (weâve even written about this exact concept)- youâll have bad days, busy days, stressful days, angry days where you want to cry into a pillow. Even I come home sometimes and, when asked how my day went, tell my roommate the same thing my dad used to tell me. But this shouldnât happen every day. Why? Because- and this may surprise you- some people actually have jobs in which theyâre happy most of the time. Maybe, they even have fun. And it makes them a better employee (just read this article and this one), because they come into the office feeling motivated and excited to get things done. 2. âI Didnât Choose a Fun Industry and Thatâs Thatâ Well, thatâs just defeatist. First off, youâre never stuck in one industry. People change careers all the time into roles that are more interesting to them (just read these stories about people whoâve transitioned from teaching to engineering, from being a lawyer to being a social worker, to working as a mental health counselor to working as a TV producer, and from being a government worker to becoming a beer and wine director). And also, any industry can be fun if youâre at the right company and passionate about what youâre doing. Itâs very possible your job isnât âfunâ because you work for a dysfunctional company or with people you donât respect, or are a part of projects that you donât believe in, but not because you work in a âjoy-lessâ field. 3. âMoney Makes Me Happy- I Donât Need to Enjoy How I Make Itâ I wonât deny that having money can make your life easier, if not more enjoyable. I also wonât deny that in many situations, itâs not a luxury, but rather a true necesity. But plenty of research proves that itâs not your key to happiness. One study reported that lottery winners are no happier than losers. Another suggests that focusing our energies on money distracts us from what really makes us happy. And another, probably one of the more famous discoveries, found that our happiness peaks at around $75,000 a year. But besides all the scientific evidence, think about it this way: You spend about 50 hours a week at work, also known as 30% of your time (and thatâs not even factoring in how much we check email after hours). Consider our other life responsibilities (eating, sleeping, chores), and that leaves us with very little time to actually enjoy all the money we make. If youâre spending most of your days doing one thing, doesnât it just make sense to like that one thing? Just a little bit? Hopefully Iâve convinced you that itâs possible (and necessary) to be happy in your role. Iâm not saying that you should drop everything today to pursue something you love. But I believe everyone deserves the best in their career and if you take just one baby step today toward something thatâll make you happy, youâll see that it can completely change your outlook on work and life.

7 things deeply intuitive people do differently
7 things deeply intuitive people do differently 7 things deeply intuitive people do differently Steve Jobs once said that intuition is more powerful than intellect. As it turns out, Jobs was onto something, and the scientific community backs him up. It seems that weâve been giving intuition far too little respect. In a Salk Institute study, participants were asked to play a card game where they pulled cards from two different decks. The decks were rigged so that one would âwinâ more often than the other, but the participants didnât know that- at least, not overtly. It took about 50 cards for participants to consciously realize that the decks were different and about 80 to figure out what that difference was.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! However, what was really interesting was that it only took about 10 cards for their palms to start sweating slightly every time they reached for a card from the âlosingâ deck. It was about that same time that they started s ubconsciously favoring the âwinningâ deck. While thatâs all very interesting in a clinical setting, you have to ask yourself if it holds true in real life. Apparently, it does. When it comes to making major decisions, your intuition can matter just as much as your intellect. In one study, car buyers who relied on careful analysis of all of the available information were happy with their purchases about 25% of the time, while buyers who made quicker, more intuitive purchases were happy with their purchases about 60% of the time.Intuition comes from the primitive brain; itâs an artifact of the early days of man when the brainâs ability to detect hidden dangers ensured our survival. These days, we use this capability so little that we donât know how to listen to it properly.Whether you listen to it or not, your intuition is healthy and functioning. If you want to make better decisions in life, youâd do well to brush up on your intuition skills. You can start by emulating so me of the habits of highly intuitive people. They slow down enough to hear their inner voiceBefore you can pay attention to your intuition, you first have to be able to hear it amid the cacophony of your busy life. You have to slow down and listen, which often requires solitude. Taking some time away from the everyday, even something as brief as going for a walk, is a great way to turn up the volume of your intuition. They follow their inner voiceOne of the primary reasons that some people are more intuitive than others is that they actually listen to their gut feeling instead of dismissing or doubting it. And that doesnât mean that they ignore their analytical mind and their critical thinking skills; thereâs a difference between using reason as a system of checks and balances and using it to talk yourself out of what your intuition knows to be true. They practice empathic accuracyIâd probably lose you if I said that highly intuitive people read minds, so Iâll use the scientifi c term: empathic accuracy. Itâs not magic; itâs an intuitive awareness of what other people are thinking and feeling, using cues such as body language and tone of voice. Itâs an extremely powerful form of empathy that helps foster deep connections with other people. They practice mindfulnessâMindfulnessâ sounds even more New-Agey than trusting your intuition, but itâs really just a fancy term for focusing on being in the moment. Mindfulness is a great technique to filter out all of the distractions in your environment- and your brain. When you do that, you can hear your intuition loud and clear. They nurture their creativityDid you ever have one of those paint-by-number kits when you were a kid? Talk about turning art into a science- all you have to do is put the right color in the right little space. You may end up with a pretty painting, but the only intuition involved is guessing what colors youâre supposed to use in those really tiny spaces. No paint-by-numbers kit i n the world can make a skilled artist create something as novel and monumental as the Sistine Chapel or the Mona Lisa. The missing ingredient is intuition. And, just as intuition is the secret ingredient in creativity, being intentionally creative strengthens your use of intuition. They trust their gutHave you ever made a decision and immediately started to feel sick, maybe even kind of clammy? Well, that affective experience is the bodyâs way of informing you that the decision your analytic mind came to is at odds with your instinct. They analyze their dreamsIf you accept the science that demonstrates the power of intuition, itâs not much of a leap to accept that our dreams are often manifestations of intuition. Sure, sometimes dreams are nonsense, but they often try to tell us something. Intuitive people donât just think, âWow, that was a weird dream!â; they ask themselves, âWhere did that come from, and what can I take away from it?âBringing It All TogetherThe science is clear: intuition is a powerful force of the mind that can help us to make better decisions. Fortunately, intuition is a skill that you can hone by practicing the habits of highly intuitive people. How would you rate your intuition? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.This article first appeared on Linkedin.

What To Do If You Dont Want to Be A Manager, But Want More Money
What To Do If You Don't Want to Be A Manager, But Want More Money What To Do If You Don't Want to Be A Manager, But Want More Money To borrow (and slightly adapt) a quote from Spider-Man: With a great salary comes great responsibility. If you want to continually increase your salary, youâll often reach a point where youâre not just responsible for yourself - youâre overseeing a team as well. However, there are always exceptions to that rule. If youâre not cut out to be a manager , boosting your pay isnât impossible - you just need to be strategic about it. We turned to a couple of salary and career experts to get the lowdown on how to make the big bucks without becoming a manager. It is possible to turn down a promotion into management while still boosting your salary - more on that later - but itâs definitely easier to be clear about it from the get-go. âWhen youâre looking for jobs, be deliberate about the roles/companies you apply for. Ensure they are ones which could benefit from your deep subject matter expertise and/or individual contributions. Donât take a job where you know you canât advance unless you manage others, otherwise you may find yourself disappointed and frustrated,â says Foram Soni Sheth , Co-Founder and Career Coach at Ama la Vida . The key to finding out whether or not youâll be expected to move into management eventually is during the interview process, says Josh Doody , author of Fearless Salary Negotiation . âA good way to find this out is to ask the right questions in your interview when you get the chance. One of the questions I really like is: âWhat would a long-term career look like at this company?â This accomplishes two things: 1. It helps you understand whether theyâre expecting you to manage people any time soon, [and] 2. It will help you stand out as a studious candidate whoâs thinking about long-term business results. Win-win!â If it becomes clear that youâll be expected to move into management eventually, it may not be the right role. If that doesnât sound like the case, though, and they still mention the potential for bonuses , raises , and promotions , that may be more up your alley - especially if you can negotiate your way to a higher salary . After you accept a role like that, though, itâs important to keep the lines of communication open so that you donât accidentally end up on the fast track to a management role. âOnce youâre working at the company, I recommend talking about your career path with your manager at least once a quarter so that you can understand whatâs expected as you grow, but also so the âI prefer not to be a managerâ conversation comes up naturally before they try to slot you into a manager role,â Doody says. âThat way, youâre well ahead of that conversation and performance review or promotion conversations wonât have any surprises for you or your manager.â Sheth agrees - âThe last thing you want is for your boss to work hard to promote you to a manager role and find out at the last minute that you donât want it,â she shares. âBe upfront and honest with your boss and communicate what you want out of your job. Be sure to have frequent communication with your boss about your needs and develop a plan to work towards your goals.â Hopefully, if youâve been clear and consistent with your expectations, you wonât encounter a surprise promotion to a managerial position. In the case that it does happen, though, donât worry - âyou do not have to take it and you should definitely say something to your manager,â Doody says. You might be thinking: âCould this hurt my standing at work?â The truth is that it could , depending on your company culture and manager, Doody says, but âaccepting a managerial role and phoning it in will definitely hurt your standing at work. Accepting a role and then doing a poor job in that role could hurt your future potential at your company and affect your reputation , so you want to avoid that.â The key is to turn down the offer in a tasteful, gracious manner. âBe humble⦠thank them for the opportunity. Appreciate them and let them know how much it means to you that theyâre rewarding you,â Sheth recommends. âAfter youâve expressed your gratitude, explain to them what your time and skills would be best suited for and how that will benefit the organization and will also help you achieve your goals. Offer an alternative path and explain the impact that youâll have. This will show them that youâre invested.â Doody recommends saying something like âI really appreciate you offering me this promotion , and it means a lot to me. I prefer to keep focusing on helping the company reach its goals as an individual contributor, and I would love to talk about more ways I can add value and improve our team in that capacity.â Once youâve made it clear that youâre not interested in a promotion to a managerial position, it is possible to either pivot that into a promotion with non-managerial responsibilities or just a raise. But Doody points out that raises and promotions arenât always the same thing. âPromotions are an acknowledgment that youâre already doing the type of work associated with [a] different, more advanced job. Raises are an acknowledgment that youâre adding unanticipated, additional business value since the last time your salary was set,â he says. If you believe you are indeed adding that unanticipated, additional business value though, âit might be appropriate to carefully build a strong case and ask for a raise ,â he says. âYour boss and the leaders of the company care about having happy and productive employees that will give back to the organization. So, continue to demonstrate your worth and be proactive about what your goal is and how itâs going to help not only you but the organization,â Sheth recommends. From there, all you have to do is state the case for why you deserve to be earning more . âClearly explain what youâre doing and the impact youâre having on the organization and its bottom line. Your work will speak for itself and the raise will be a no-brainer,â Sheth says.

Robotic Firefighting Vehicles
Robotic Firefighting Vehicles Robotic Firefighting Vehicles Fires create dangerous conditions, but fires at some locations, like flammable or explosive material storage areas and nuclear power plants, are too hazardous for human firefighters to enter. Fire and rescue organizations now have a new option: FireRob, the MVF-5 Autonomous Firefighting Robotic Vehicle. Manufactured by Croatian manufacturer DOK-ING, FireRob is a specialty firefighting vehicle that a single operator can direct on the ground by remote control. It extinguishes fires without intervention of firefighters with a high-pressure cannon on a hydraulic arm that pumps water up to 55 m away. It carries 1,800 L of water and 600 L of foam in its two onboard tanks. DOK-ING says it was inspired by video games. It looks like a small tank and can be used in locations where traditional firefighting vehicles cannot go. The manufacturer claims It turns on a dime and is able to climb and move through challenging terrain. It is powerful enough to tow objects to safety or push objects out of the way, clearing a path for traditional firefighting vehicles. It punches through objects such as walls and it grips, lifts, and removes objects and obstacles with its blade-tool attachment at the front of the vehicle. The FireRob in action. The hydraulic arm can pump water up to 55 m away.DOK-ING coordinated an international consortium with partners in Croatia, Greece, Spain, and the U.K. to help evolve prototypes made in 2006 into their firefighting vehicles of today. Beginning in 2008, a European Commission RD Program award (called FP7) of 1.04 million euros enabled the consortium to develop and integrate several advancements with a two-year project. Engineering Enhanced Protection and Safety An important project requirement was that the vehicle perform well in a fire situation without suffering significant damages, able to safely operate and return from the fire site. Researchers and engineers developed a new, proprietary, multilayer thermal coating and corresponding vehicle application process. The high-temperature-resistant fire protection shield is based on reflective intumescent materials that bubble, expand in volume, and become denser when exposed to fire. At a recent conference, DOK-ING reported the multilayer coatings on MVF-5 are able to withstand 700 C for 15 minutes or 400 C for 30 minutes, making it suitable for high-temperature areas. DOK-ING officials say it is able to get closer to a fire than other firefighting vehicles. It can also work longer there while the remote control operator is at a safe distance away. Another requirement was to add environmental feedback for safer control. A new software package based on pattern-recognition algorithms was developed that recognizes the presence of humans as seen by a high-resolution thermal vision camera mounted on the water gun. Five additional waterproof cameras mounted on the gripper, two bullet cameras on each side, and rotating cameras at the vehicles front and rear also were integrated to provide full view over the vehicle and surrounding environment. DOK-ING reported achieving a visibility enhancement over a 2-km range, and operators are alerted when humans are detected. The final task was to improve remote-control operation of the vehicle in reduced visibility conditions. An inertial navigation system was developed and validated during the project, integrating GPS and IMU sensors, algorithms, and software that achieved a system dynamic positioning range of plus or minus 2 m. Other smaller, remote-controlled vehicles have been adapted to fight fires, such as Segways water cannon prototype, QinetiQs remotely-operated vehicle, and others that also contain cameras, high-pressure hoses, and remote operation. Fire-rob is the only that integrates hydraulic arm blade, grip, and other tool attachments for path clearing in difficult terrain or inaccessible areas, and carries its own water and foam tanks. A Powerful New Tool Ana Majetic, project manager at DOK-ING, says the MVF-5 vehicle passed field testing and showed excellent characteristics for special conditions and inaccessible terrains. The new FireRob has better and more reliable electronics, a smaller dimensional footprint enabling it to be transported in the back of a truck or by helicopter, and higher capacity water and foam tanks than the original prototype units. Its onboard 2,000-L-per-minute pump and water tank can provide a powerful, steady stream of water for nearly a minute. When more capacity is needed, the unit can be connected to alternate water or foam sources like a fire truck, hydrant, or a lake. DOK-ING plans to create a hybrid diesel/electric version in future systems. Two FireRobs have been manufactured and are being used at several Russian nuclear power plants and equipment. Two more are currently in production. Majeti says they have the capacity to produce 60 units per year. Debbie Sniderman is CEO of VI Ventures LLC, a technical consulting company. An important project requirement was that the vehicle perform well in a fire situation without suffering significant damages, able to safely operate and return from the fire site.

What to Ask When Your Ideas at Work Get Shot Down - The Muse
What to Ask When Your Ideas at Work Get Shot Down - The Muse What to Ask When Your Ideas at Work Get Shot Down I wish I could tell you that your manager will always love your ideas. But unfortunately, as you probably already know, thatâs not the case. And whenever she shoots something down, youâll want to deliver a monologue along the lines of, âYouâre missing the brilliance behind my thinking and should be taken to a hospital.â Or, you might let yourself believe that youâre a failure and that you should just quit now. Or you might even lash out and holler about how they âneverâ listen to you. As cathartic as those reactions might feel, none of them are actually productive. To help you move on and learn from every rejection, make these phrases a regular part of your vocabulary. 1. âWhat Would Make You Say Yes to This Idea?â Your idea is toast when your manager shuts it down, right? Well, it doesnât have to be. Your original thinking mightâve been off the mark, but that doesnât mean there isnât anything worth salvaging from it. And chances are, your boss would agree with with that. So instead of accepting defeat, ask questions like âWhat would make you say yes?â and âIs there any part of the idea that did resonate?â Those answers will help you understand what worked and what didnât. Then, use that feedback to come up with something else thatâs more impactful and even more difficult for your boss to shake her head at. 2. âThanks for Your Feedback, Would it Make Sense for Me to Bring it Up Again in a Few Weeks/Months?â Itâs worth saying this again, so I will: Youâre smart, you bring a lot to the table, and you have a lot of good ideas. But nobody on the face of the planet has ever had 100% of their ideas implemented. At the same time, it doesnât necessarily mean that theyâre bad. Iâve lost count of the number of times my manager has said to me, âThis is interesting, but we have bigger fish to fry. Letâs revisit this in the future.â But why not now, right? After all, you havenât presented something ridiculous. Why canât your manager move things around to accommodate you? Re-read those questions and think about how they sound. Would you respond in kind to someone who made this much of a push? Instead, simply thank your manager for the feedback and ask if thereâs a specific time period during which she feels you could explore it further. Youâll be able to gauge from her response whether sheâs genuinely into the idea or just avoiding shutting you down altogether. 3. âWhat Should I Focus on Instead?â You could very easily shut down after you, well, get shut down. It might even feel like you donât have anything else worth working on, especially now that your idea is off the table. But itâs also important to remember that you still have plenty of other things to do at work. And even though your manager said âno thanks,â Iâm willing to bet that she has bigger priorities on her plate that she could use your help with. So, instead of pouting, find out what you can be working on instead. This response will show her that youâre truly a team player, even when youâve been shut down. And if and when there is a fit for one of your brilliant ideas, your boss will remember just how helpful you are and make sure you get the resources needed to accomplish it. So far, weâve talked about what to do when your idea gets shot down. And thatâs a great start. But are you still feeling like you should keep your âbigâ mouth shut? Does it seem easier to keep your thoughts to yourself, especially if your boss always says no to your ideas? I hope you donât buy into that idea. Raising your hand (either literally or metaphorically) takes guts. And every time you do it, it gets a little easier and a little less scary. So donât stop speaking up. Instead, push yourself to turn every single rejection into a lesson. Eventually, youâll get so good at pitching your ideas that theyâll be (almost) impossible to turn down.
